Sixt Amsterdam Car Rental
Funnily enough, one of the oldest rental car companies in the world is one you may never have heard of. Sixt Car Rental was founded by Martin Sixt in Germany in 1912. What began as a small operation with only seven cars (most of which were Mercedes, of course) and catered exclusively to British nobility and rich Americans has turned into one of the largest rental car companies in Europe.
Unlike most rental car companies, Sixt specializes in cars that you'd want to drive. They offer a great selection of relatively cheap Mercedes for rent in Amsterdam, as well as smart little VWs and even hybrid-fueled vehicles. They also offer a special on the famous (and ultra tiny) Smart Car if you've ever wanted to drive one, Sixt is the way to go. They Smart Car ForTwo Coupe goes for about 100 for the weekend in the off-season.
There are a few things you'll want to watch out for when renting from Sixt. It may happen more often with this company that the car you requested and should have reserved isn't on the lot. And while they are willing to work with their customers on offering different (and sometimes better) choices or refunds on the difference in price, this can be a bit of a headache. Another thing to watch out for is mileage (or kilometer) limits on contracts. While many rental contracts come with unlimited mileage, it's important to read the small print and double check that you know what you're getting into it can be easy for the "100 km daily limit" to sneak by you.
That said, most customer seem to have great luck with Sixt rental cars in Amsterdam. They offer a selection of great cars that are clean, well-cared-for, and fun to drive.
Here's a pointer: if you pick up your Sixt rental car in Amsterdam's Schipol airport, it'll come with a hefty 40 surcharge. If you don't mind taking a train into the city, you can avoid the fine by using their location in southeast Amsterdam.
