Amsterdam Coffee Shops
Dampkring Coffeeshop
Many of the coffeeshops in Amsterdam can be a little intimidating to first timers. They're small, dark, and crowded; the moment you walk in you feel a little conspicuous or out of place. Especially if you're not a habitual user of marijuana.
The Dampkring is something alltogether different. It's a great coffeeshop both for pot newbies and long time users, and for both tourists and locals. What makes Dampkring Coffeeshop different is its size, feel, and great decorations. The interior of the coffeeshop is painted in bright colors, with a stunning combination of Arabic, Buddist, and bohemian decorations. There's plenty of room to sit down, and lots of quiet corners to smoke what you buy in peace (during the less busy hours).
The staff at Dampkring is knowledegable, and most of the waitresses are pretty young women. They're also very friendly, which can be something of a rarity in Amsterdam coffeehouses, where tourists aren't always made to feel welcome. Dampkring is also a great place to meet people from all over the world, as it's one of the most popular coffeehouses in the city. Something about the atmosphere (and the marijuana, of course) facilitates conversation, making it easy to strike up a conversation with a neighboring table.
In fact, the place is so cool-looking and fun to hang out in that they shot a scene for the movie Oceans 12 with Brad Pitt and George Clooney there a fact which the owners don't hesitate to advertise again and again. They even have a type of marijuana names after the film.
The Dampkring caters to a young crowd, and tends to get very busy in the mid to late afternoon. So if you want to get a seat, you'll want to get there early.
