Amsterdam Coffee Shops

Rokerij Coffeeshop

Rokerij Coffeeshop

The Leidsplein area tends to be packed with "tourist traps." Overpriced restaurants, gimmicky stores, and coffeeshops designed just to draw in tourists. But one of the better coffeeshops in Amsterdam is located here in the Leidsplein area. Rokerij Coffeeshops has four locations spread out all over the city, but their first, largest, and most popular location is at Lange Leidsedwarsstaat, just next to the Leidsplein.

Established in 1996,Rokerij is a big, friendly coffeeshop with a full bar (though like all Amsterdam coffeeshops they're prohibited from serving alcohol as of April, 2007). There's a cozy lounge area in the back of the coffeeshop, complete with cushioned benches, pillows, and low tables. The shop always filled with incense and is decorated with pretty Hindu and Nepali artwork and decorations. The mosaic work on the floors is especially beautiful. The only light in the shop comes from low strategic lighting and candles placed throughout the room. It's a very relaxing and welcoming atmosphere.

While Rokerij coffeeshop is generally full of tourists, you'll still find one or two locals in there, too. The great ambiance and selection of products make it a favorite among both. Marijuana products are purchased at a small booth right next to the entrance, and the dealers are very good about offering advice when needed. The entire staff is pretty friendly; the owners seem to have a penchant for hiring very pretty young waitresses from all over the world, who are outgoing and friendly and give the coffeeshop a very international feel. With a varied international customer base, it's easy to strike up conversations with people from all over the world.
