­Stedelijk Museum

In the rush to visit Amsterdam's famous Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk museum (especially now that it is under renovation) is often overlooked. However, this museum has a long history in Amsterdam— ever since its opening in 1895, it's drawn both admiration and critique from the Dutch (and the rest of the world) for its artistic decisions. According to many, the Stedelijk Museum is one of the world's most innovative modern art museums.

The Stedelijk Museum Collection

The Stedelijk Museum is known to have one of the most intersting and complete collections of modern art in the world. Among its collections can be found works by renouned Dutch artists of all modern art movements, such as Cubism, Impressionism, Expressionism, and Fauvism. In addition, you can also find wonderful Dutch photography and a wonderful collection of high-concept design furniture and other objects.

As well as Dutch art, The Stedelijk Museum is also home to many works by modern American and European artists, such as Picasso, Warhol, and Matisse.

Unfortunately, the Stedelijk Museum is undergoing massive renovation and will be until December of 2009. Its original building is located next to the Van Gogh Museum in the Museumplein area; but this remains closed to visitors until renovations are completed. The museum has a temporary display, which until renovations are finished is referred to as Stedelijk CS (Stedelijk Centraal Station), near Centraal Station on the Oosterdokskade. Here you can find a decent selection of the Stedelijk's modern art collection; however, the bulk of the collection is in storage until the reopening of the Stedelijk's main building in 2009.

Still, even the temporary collection warrants a visit. It's open to the public from 10:00am to 6:00pm daily, and adult entrance is €9.00. Visitors may also want to take a trip to the restaurant on the top floor of the building, where they can enjoy a drink, a reasonably-priced meal, and 360 degree views across the Dam and the harbor.
